General health is important as one’s lifestyle regimen determines their quality of life. The adequate amount of exercise along with eating a well-balanced diet puts individuals at a far less risk of experiencing health issues. Especially for those who may work in environments where they consistently lift heavy tools and materials, work in harsh environments or sit in a sedentary position for long periods of time. Some men may not even take extra precautions on minimizing the effects of wear and tear on the body, focusing instead on “getting the job done” – that is, until the body sends a signal that something may be wrong. Let’s cover a few basic health routines that may impact men’s health.

Exercise For Men

The average adult male should be exercising 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity weekly. (1) How can that be incorporated in your daily routine? Add going for a walk 30 minutes every day whether that be during your lunch break or when you get home in the evenings. For more vigorous activity, instead of walking implement running, jogging, or cycling for a divided-up time throughout the week to insure you are getting at least 75 minutes in total. In addition, it is important to incorporate body weight or low weight activities 2 or more days a week to strengthen and maintain your muscles.

Diet For Men

The average adult male’s diet should consist of lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and whole grains. Foods that are high in fats and sugar should be avoided, and limited salt intake should be taken into consideration as well. Eating a healthy diet could help maintain desired weight, boost mood and energy, and may assist in preventing health related issues. 

Water Intake

Men should minimize the intake of alcohol and drinks that are high in sugar like soda and juices. Sugary drinks can lead to unwanted weight gain while excessive alcohol can also cause weight gain and can affect blood pressure and cholesterol health. It is recommended for men to drink around 15 cups of water a day. (4)  Accomplishing this recommendation daily is significant as around 60% of an individual’s body weight is made of water. (2) Water has many benefits that include carrying nutrients to cells, cushioning joints, assisting in digestion, regulating body temperature, and flushing toxins from the organs.

Men and Annual Doctors’ Visits

60% of men do not go to the doctor when ill and about 3 in 5 men do not go to annual physicals. (5) Most men do not go to the doctor for physicals or screenings because they fear the outcome or view going to the doctor as a sign of weakness. (3) Why is it important for men to go to annual visits and screenings? Attending regular checkups can detect life threatening matters towards an individual’s health by having bloodwork and examinations done. By checking these numbers annually, you put yourself in a preventative state of more serious illnesses.
