What Is Detoxification and Why Is It Important?

We hear a lot about detoxifying, but what exactly is it, and why is it important for your health? Think of detoxification as cleansing the body from the inside out. It is the removal of toxins, or essentially poisonous substances, that build up in the body. These toxins can include pesticides, food additives, pollutants, and other chemicals, that negatively affect our health.

Our bodies are designed to naturally detoxify, and many organs play a key role in the detoxification process, including the kidneys, liver, and intestines, as well as the lungs and even our skin! However, there are many factors that can impact the body’s ability to detoxify properly, such as a poor diet, increased stress, and exposure to environmental pollutants.

What Can I Do to Help My Body Detox?

Exercise

In addition to the other health benefits exercise provides the body, exercise is also a great way to help your body detox. Sweating helps to eliminate toxins by cleansing the skin, promoting a natural detoxification process.

Eating Healthy

A healthy diet is one of the most important steps in cleansing your body. Eating the right foods helps your body to naturally detox. Avoid processed foods that have high fructose, trans fats, and artificial colors and flavoring. These foods interfere with the detoxification process in the body. Try incorporating these foods into your diet to help your body detox effectively:

Fats and Oils – organic coconut oil, olive oil

Clean, lean, proteins – salmon, chicken, eggs

Seeds and Nuts – walnuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, almonds

Vegetables – leafy greens, broccoli, cabbage, Brussel sprouts

Fruits – apples, blueberries, grapefruit, avocado, kiwi

Good sources of plant proteins – beans, lentils, legumes

Water

Since our body is constantly losing water throughout the day, remembering to drink an adequate amount of water is important. In addition to hydrating your body, drinking more water helps to flush toxins from your body.

Sleep

Don’t forget about the importance of sleep! Getting adequate, quality sleep is important for your body to detox effectively. During sleep, your brain actually detoxes itself and removes toxins that have built up that day.
